Climate change and its impacts on coastal regions, Brussel, 15/10/2008, org. Representation of the Free Hanseatic City of Bremen to the EU
De Bremer EU-Vertegenwoordiging verwelkomt op 15 oktober 2008 EU-Commissaris voor Milieu Stavros Dimas tijdens een avondlijk evenement rond de invloed van klimaatsverandering op kustgebieden.
"Climate change is one of the biggest challenges we face. Its consequences affect European regions in different ways: especially vulnerable are, for example, coastal zones, Mediterranean regions and mountainous areas.
The European Union has put forward an integrated energy and climate change policy proposal, including ambitious targets. With climate change already happening, European regions have to adapt to its impact. In its Green Paper "Adapting to climate change in Europe – options for EU action" the European Commission emphasises that adaptation measures should be developed on a regional and national as well as on a European level.
Research institutes in Bremen study the global climate system and its impact on ecological and economic systems, and develop adaptation strategies. With its competence in the fields of renewable energies (especially wind energy), energy saving and climate protection, Bremen contributes to achieving the objectives set by the European Union for 2020. Due to the rise in sea levels combined with the increased risk of storms, coastal regions like Bremen are especially at risk. We want to discuss the consequences of these climatic changes for European coastal regions as well as regional and European adaptation strategies."
